Why is “Belly of the Beast”? Read on. And on. And on.
The first wine is Point Concepcion Chardonnay, 'Caponera', from Santa Barbara County, CA. Winemaker Peter Cargasacchi, also of Cargasacchi Wines, established Point Concepcion in 2002 with his wife Julia. Their goal: make food friendly wines from California's Central Coast. Peter's wines are made with minimal intervention, and truly show a sense of place. The wines are "made in the vineyard". This Chardonnay is crisp and shows a delicate balance of bright fruit, and minerality.
The next wine is JK Carriere White Pinot Noir 'Glass' from Oregon's Willamette Valley. Jim Prosser, owner and winemaker, has fashioned this dry rose after a Champagne rose, but without the bubbles. Prosser worked in wineries in New Zealand, Australia, Burgundy, and, of course, Oregon before founding his own gig in 1999. His Pinots always get critical acclaim for the great depth and balance.
Wine number three is AP Vin's Pinot Noir from the renown Gary's Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Andrew P. Vingiello, the winemaker here, established AP Vin in 2003, and specializes in vineyard designated Pinot Noir. He purchases fruit from some of the best growers in the state, and makes his wines in San Francisco. This Gary's Vineyard wine is exceptionally generous with loads of ripe fruit and lovely herbal details.
The fourth wine is a Pinot Noir from Keefer Ranch, in the Green Valley appellation in Russian River Valley. Winemakers Craig Strehlow and Marcy Keefer make this wonderfully detailed wine blended from several clones of Pinot Noir grown on different plots on the ranch. Many famous Pinots are made from Keefer Ranch grapes including an offering from AP Vin.
Next up is Sandler Pinot Noir from the Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. Ed Kurtzman makes this wine in the August West winery in San Francisco. The Bien Nacido is one of three vineyard designate Pinot Noirs that Sandler is currently offering. Kurtzman started the Sandler label in 2003, and has been making very small quantities of artisan wine from purchased fruit since. The wines, like all of the Pinot Posse wines feature a real commitment to vineyard terroir.
The last wine of the evening is a Cabernet Franc from Washington State's Yakima Valley. Though Owen Roe's David O'Reilly is widely known for his Oregon Pinots, this may be our favorite of his wines. The 2008 Rosa Mystica Cabernet Franc from Owen Roe is elegant and detailed, but also quite powerful with dark fruit and spice. It is rare to find a straight Cab Franc with such balance. O'Reilly is blessed to have found such great fruit to make this world-class wine.
